About ATS Systems for Uninterrupted Power

About ATS Systems for Uninterrupted Power
No emergency backup power system is complete until it’s connected to a properly functioning ATS. An ATS, or Automatic Transfer Switch, monitors power supply and automatically conducts the transition from a prime power source to the backup generator, and vice versa. This is an essential operation that ensures that your facility receives continuous power, and no damage is sustained during the transition of the load from one power source to another.

How Does an ATS Work?

Without a properly functioning ATS, the transition of your load from one power source to the other can create numerous difficulties. If both power sources are connected simultaneously, it can overload circuits and machines. The process of connecting both power sources can also create backfeed between the two that can cause damaging surges through utility power lines and to your standby generator. The ATS manages the flow of power to protect electrical systems and maintain continuous power, whether that power is drawn from the utility line or a standby generator.

An ATS constantly monitors power supply and senses when utility power is intermittent, insufficient, or entirely offline. When a deficiency is detected, it turns on the backup power automatically and then transfers the electrical load of your facility when the backup generator is ready. After making the switch, the ATS continues to monitor power supply from the utility lines, and when it senses that utility power is available and stable again, it again moves your electric load onto the prime power source and shuts down the standby generator. All of this happens without any human intervention, which means that everyone can continue normal business operations without interruption.

Manual transfer switches are also available. These don’t monitor power supply and make the switch automatically, but instead require human action. It’s important to note that for certain industries essential for human safety, an ATS is required by law as a part of your standby generator system.

What Kinds of ATS Are Available?

The main way to classify ATS systems and determine which is right for you is by determining what your power needs are. Most ATS systems will be labeled by their Amp capacity. This means that if you ever make modifications to your standby power capabilities and needs, you must also update your ATS to ensure that it can properly handle transitioning the size of the load.

Different ATS offerings will have different functionality available on top of their basic purpose. Some ATS systems can also control which essential systems are powered by the standby power in order to increase the run time of the standby generator. Some offer remote monitoring, and some log power events so that you can collect data about power transfers and generator performance.
