How to Get the Most out of Your Generator

How to Get the Most out of Your Generator
Generators are complex machines, and those machines need attention and maintenance to function at their highest degree of efficiency.

Limit the Load

Pay attention to the load that you’re placing on the generator when it’s in use. The more devices you have running off the generator at any one time, the more fuel it will use and the more wear and tear you will place on its mechanical parts over time.

Regular Inspections

Just like with any other piece of heavy machinery, your generator needs regular inspections to function at peak efficiency. Inspect all components of your generator such as wires, hoses, alternators, etc. at regular intervals to ensure that they aren’t showing any signs of wear and are still functioning as intended by the manufacturer.

Regular Oil Changes

Your generator runs on an engine, and it can be easy to forget that engines need oil in the absence of a convenient indicator light. Every so often, check the oil levels in the generator to ensure that it hasn’t run dry. If you need to change the oil in your generator, be sure to use a high-quality oil or the same one recommended by the manufacturer. Ensure all seals and filters are properly secured as well.

Use a High-Grade Fuel

To put it simply: the higher the grade of fuel that you use in your generator, the more efficient it will be. And: it will last longer. Low grade fuels emit more particulate than higher grade fuels, and these waste by products can increase the wear on your generator over time. When you use higher grade fuels, you reduce this tear and increase overall efficiency and power output per gallon of fuel used.

Store It Well When Not in Use

As with any other important piece of machinery, a generator that is not stored in good conditions will deteriorate in response to that neglect. When not in use, your generator should be stored in a safe environment where it won’t be a hazard to people or animals. It should also be kept clean and dry, so as not to promote the formation of rust which will not only lower your efficiency, but it may even cause the generator to fail entirely.

Monitor for Problems

Observe your generator when it’s in use for early signs of problems that could be rectified through routine maintenance of the machine. Potential issues that may need correction include but aren’t limited to increases in fuel consumption, unusual sounds, or warning lights. If these indications happen, it’s important to correct the issue causing them or refer the machine to a professional for diagnosis and repair. When problems are caught early, they tend to be repairable. Additionally, you should run your generator for at least 30 minutes out of every month. This will allow you to ensure that the machine is running as it should and alert you early to potential issues such as low oil or rust before they cause generator failure.
