If You Want a Bright Future, Become a Generator Technician

If You Want a Bright Future, Become a Generator Technician
Electricity underpins every facet of modern life. From the comforts we enjoy to the machines we rely on, electrical power is the key that ties everything together and makes everything possible. Generator technicians are the men and women who keep the power flowing. If you are searching for a stable career with applicable and transferable skills to any industry, becoming a generator technician is a career path you should strongly consider.

A Day in the Life of Generator Technicians

As a generator technician, your day may involve any of the following tasks:

  • Installation of new power generation equipment

  • Calibrating systems

  • Performing safety inspections

  • Troubleshooting potential mechanical faults and hazards

  • Preparing power generation equipment for transport

  • Performing load bank tests on power generators

  • Performing maintenance, including cleaning, rewiring, or replacing components

  • Updating maintenance records and repair logs

  • Training new personnel and completing continuing education coursework

Get the Training

Many schools offer training for generator technicians. Most courses take between 3-6 months to complete, and we recommend obtaining at least an associate's degree or vocational certificate. We also strongly recommend completing an Electrical Generation Systems Association (EGSA) program. This is the gold standard within the power generation industry. Upon completion, you will have a solid understanding of generators, alternators, voltage regulation, power generator safety, automatic transfer switches, and more. An EGSA certification on your resume will open doors in every industry.

Be Ready To Be Mobile

While you may find a job in a dedicated location, many generator technicians travel as part of their job. It is common for technicians in the oil and gas industry, mining, forestry, emergency response, and other fields to travel to and from job sites. If you enjoy travel, working in these industries can provide excitement and an ever-changing work environment.

Of course, not every generator technician has to travel. If you would prefer to stay in one area, there are plenty of opportunities within healthcare facilities, retail operations, utility companies, and others.

Be Prepared To Be a Continual Student

While the physics that governs the basic operations of power generation systems don't change, the tools and the technology most certainly do. There are many exciting developments occurring within the power generation industry that generator technicians must master. This includes everything from the capabilities of the generators to the tools used to monitor generator operation. As a generator technician, you will have to become a perpetual student to ensure that your skills and knowledge are up-to-date.
