What Are the Steps of Load Bank Testing?
Many steps go into the load bank testing process. In order to achieve accurate results, it is vital that each step is performed in the correct sequence. Otherwise, there is a risk of returning false results or causing damage to the generator. At Gen-Tech,
our EGSA certified generator technicians have performed thousands of load bank tests over the years, and we guarantee that you can rely on the quality and accuracy of our load bank testing services.
When performed correctly, load bank testing will verify the generator's ability to deliver the power you need. It can also help identify potential problems before they can cause costly damage to the genset. Toward that goal, the following is an outline of the steps we follow when performing
load bank testing for our clients.
Step 1 - Fuel & Coolant Check
The first step our certified generator technicians perform is to inspect the fluid levels. We verify that the fuel tank is full and that the generator has a sufficient supply of oil and coolant.
Step 2 - Start-Up and Operating Temperature Check
Our technicians will start the generator and perform a visual inspection of operations. We allow the generator to reach its standard operating temperature and listen for any abnormal sounds that can indicate potential problems. If any problems are detected, we discontinue testing until the issue is identified and corrected.
Step 3 - Connecting the Load
At this stage of the load bank test, our generator technician will apply the largest loads first and then add smaller loads until the load carried reaches 50% of the generator's maximum continuous rated load.
Step 4 - Amperage Check
We utilize an ammeter to check the voltage within each leg. The objective of the amperage check is to verify that the voltage of each leg is neutral and that it doesn't drop below 105 volts at a full load.
Step 5 - Load Monitoring
Our generator technicians will continue to listen for abnormal noises and monitor the generator for signs of overheating. This stage can last for between 4-24 hours for most generators but may extend up to a full week for industrial prime power generators.
Step 6 - Shut Down and Recording Results
At this final stage, the test is gradually wound down. We methodically remove the loads, allowing the generator to run under progressively lighter loads for a period that usually lasts around an hour. Once all loads are removed, we allow the generator to cool before completely shutting the unit down. At this point, we record the results and provide clients with recommendations for any required corrective actions.
